Those dying then
The video “Those - Dying Then“ takes the spectator back to the summer of 2015 when we were confronted with the terrible pictures of a never ending migrant influx; it is thus in direct opposition to the society of massculture which markets events like these shamelessly. Three children, Emil, Mia and Paula, seemingly asleep by the sound of the sea, at a certain point in time fall into oblivion; paralysis, agony and indifference towards other worlds we want no part of and a loss of common values are the motives Mares puts into cruel, brave pictures. These are metaphors for a lost innocence which only lives in children’s souls; and for an artist’s ethical task of tracing signs of the time, reflect them and document them.
When the American poetess Emily Dickinson wrote “Those - Dying Then“ – inspiration for Mares‘ work-, she was deeply moved by the inner discrepancy of the randomness of death, the absence of a God and whether we have to accept it as immutable or not.
