Deltitnu
Alessandro Sau (Italy)

Based on The 120 Days of Sodom by the Marquis de Sade, Deltitnu is the main title for a work formed by two episodes. The four fuckers is the first chapter of a story that deals with the problem of image in relation to language. Aesthetic categories of taste are questioned as linguistic rules of perversion and domain on image. The language which does not subjugate itself to image, and on the contrary it makes image slave to it, ends up revolving within itself to the ultimate meaninglessness of excrement. Playing with painted cubes, it is my attempt to intermingle two different modalities to come to the totality of image: that one which comes to totality renouncing to image as a power to express and signify (minimal form); that one which extends its singularity of representation to the universal (Van Gogh).

Myrmicon
Mikhail Basov (Russian Federation)

Michael Basov’s work “Myrmicon” captures the movements of ants and intricate ornaments of their paths. Creating a “possible world”, in which ants can produce meaningful images, he tried to re-evoke the feeling of mystery and enchantment in the audience akin to that of the pristine artist. The first drawings were filled with magic. The discovery of a mere possibility to depict things with lines could be as incredible as an image created by an ant under our eyes. Thus, we may recognise the very origins of the human culture in these strange drawings and in our own experience of a miracle.

Crop Duster Octet
Gregg Biermann (United States)

One of the most iconic sequences in the history of Hollywood cinema (from Hitchcock’s North by Northwest) is deconstructed and reassembled to illuminate the patterns, rhythms and choreography of the original so as to break through and make for an eight banded kinetic tour de force. As the piece progresses the temporal displacement of each band gets closer and closer until they all unite into a remarkable grand finale. --John Columbus, Black Maria Film and Video Festival

Siamo tutti figli
Paolo Bandinu (Italy)

L'Homme grotesque
Pask D'Amico (Italy)

One day I dreamed a mouth that spoke to me from the heart of the galaxy. The geometric lines that composed it were fractals that intersected with a regular intervals. This voice was singing a Mantra in an unknown language: i did not understand the meaning of his words but I could snatch the essence of his voice. Informed me that the human was lifeform most anomalous of all the Cosmos: the perfection of the body, the mind irrationality and our false perception of time. The next day I woke up and I asked how I could visually represent my dream and after 123 days of hard work this is the result.

Person-a
Con.Tatto - Davide Mastrangelo & Francesca Leoni (Italy)

In Latin the word 'Persona' represents the actors mask and the character the he interprets. This work is about the mask that each on of us wears in life in order to relate to others. Its about searching the truth in the other person. The only way to find that truth is to go over the mask. The act of pealing the mask off is a symbolic performance executed by the artistic group Con.Tatto (Leoni & Mastrangelo) in the search of the others true self.

Heliades
Mikhail Basov (Russian Federation)

Heliades were the daughters of Helios, the Greek god of Sun, and the sisters of Phaëthon, who dared to drive his father’s sun chariot on the dome of heaven. He was unable to control the horses, nearly setting the world on fire, and was struck down by Zeus with a thunderbolt. Mourning Heliades were turned into poplar trees and from then on they have been trying to become daughters of the Sun again, which is reflected in some properties of the poplar fluff.

David Borawski (United States)

Burn Out/Erased by the First Rain, is comprised of two sequences staged and recorded from within the game GTA - San Andreas. The virtual biker does an extended circular burn out, using the motorcycle’s image of freedom and rebellion as a starting point, yet alluding to the repetition and futility of contemporary society. The imagery also references art historical performance work, specifically pieces by Michael Heizer and Lori Hersberger.

Loss
k137 (aka Alessio Spirli) (Italy)

LOSS by k137 (aka Alessio spirli) In this video I manipulated the H264 codec using quartz composer patch and applying to a secret interactive method for progressive loss of quality. The input image is a clip black and white lettering (LOSS) superimposed in post production, the black clip is a video recording of the darkness of my room, i written and recorder the word LOSS in black on white paper. In the video recorded, there is no absolute black but it is always contaminated by other sets of colors, (noise of the background, light of the nocturne city from a my window). Manipulating the resolution tan the image level information, he noise of black is accentuated. Losing and manipulating information in the codec, paradoxically increases the pictorial quality of the video clip. Losing something is not always bad!!!

Meat puppet
Donald O'Finn (United States)

This work re-purposes & re-contextualizes an abundance of diverse imagery layered in and around a Tragic/comic figure trapped in Rock. The imagery traces his shape and appears as both an extension & reflection of himself and his environment. Eventually the external pressure and internal mystery is too much and the puppet that is trapped inside explodes out.

The Kingdom (O Reino)
Ana B. / Nuno m. Pereira (Portugal)

This conceptual video is also a tableau which explores the complexities of the image: playing at the same time with the illusion of reality in film movement and the impossibility of narrative and temporal linearity to understand the multiple layers of meanings an image provides to a spectator. The different scales also redistribute the fictional space in its relationship with the spectator’s view. The video is also an allegory for freedom and imprisonment: the birds and their rituals can somehow relate to humans’ behavior in their weird and timeless quest for the ultimate freedom. The wild is always an illusion: as videoart is. And the power of the false is amazing.

Fill up the space
Salvatore Insana (Italy)

Nervous spidery spirits looking for a body (language) - theirs probably -- moving along in a space-time lapse without any shape, without any edge, borderline, in liquefaction. Filling up that space-time, to not suffer too much the temptation to sink into. Fill up the space by the void or by the human corpses fighting to float in that white magma formerly known as unconscious.

Immaterial perspectives (after Moholy-Nagy)
Gillian McIver (United Kingdom)

Immaterial Perspectives was created in the studio and was inspired by the work of Laszlo Moholy-Nagy whose film work is deeply important to me. Using a handmade zoetrope and some feedback created by the interaction between projector and camera, the piece muses on the nature of the moving image, from its earliest stages to its current existence as series of zeroes and ones. The point of the diptych here is that the conscious eye naturally gravitates to one of the screens, letting the unconscious eye absorb the other screen/s. By reversing and inverting the order of the screens during the course of the film, the conscious and the unconscious are activated.
