Chen Chen [China] - 11th edition
This enigmatic film poem traces a woman’s return to find her mother who disappeared during the Chinese Cultural Revolution. In following the sound of an erhu to photographs she is helped by two old people to uncover a delicate but difficult truth about her family. In a distinctively Chinese approach, the work treats narrative, text, sound and image as integrated poetic devices.

This work is a reflection on the Tang dynasty poet Li Shangyin’s work of the same name. Li Shangyin’s enigmatic poem does not pursue absolute meaning. Most of his work, like this film poem is deeply contemplative and influenced by the Chinese aesthetic concept of amorphosity (朦胧menlong).
